And here he thought he knew

He was just staring at the mirror, water dripping from his hair to the contours of his cheeks. Sweat mixed with remnants of his shower with the humid air toying with his body. He stared at this eyes, the pockmarks on his face, the hair he dyed, and the blank expression that he wears.

He is another, he thought. Not the one he really was. It was as if the that silver-backed piece of glass reflected someone that was a person he didn’t want to or isn’t supposed to be. He wanted to see another, for he felt that he was just not that guy he’s seeing. Confusion, is but a slight color that paints his conscious mind.

With every scar left on his cheeks, the deformities overrunning the bridge of his nose, he sees a victim of a war fought in the battlefield of hope. Here lies the woeful idiot who claims to know a lot yet fails to use his intelligence to save himself from all that leave him hurt and pitiful.

As he lets the cold drips of water left from the shower settle and the tears of his pores well up, he takes one more glance at every detail of his life-worn face, bracing himself to see one more imperfection he has to take note of, he waits. This might change, he thought, this isn’t what I’m supposed to be, he wished. He then pulls of the dry, unassuming towel and dries himself off.

He walks away, leaving to have to look at himself again for another day.
